General information
In addition to their regular studies abroad, nominated ERASMUS students have the opportunity to take part in free EILCs in their host countries. These courses are generally several weeks long and students can receive financial support for participation. The courses, which are supported by the European Commission, are available for the less widely-spoken, less widely-taught EU (and other ERASMUS-participating countries') languages – that is, most European languages APART FROM English, French and Spanish. You can only apply for a language course if you have been nominated as an ERASMUS student. It is therefore not possible to apply for an EILC if you will be studying abroad through a different scheme.
The courses take place PRIOR to the ERASMUS exchange. You cannot take part in an EILC at the end of your study abroad period. The courses are only run at certain universities in each country – not necessarily at your host institution. This offers you the opportunity to see another town/region before settling in your host town! Generally courses will be offered at appropriate levels – beginners', intermediate or advanced courses, for example.
Applying for the course will not guarantee you a space. Places will be allocated by the university hosting the courses according to their own criteria. If you are offered a space, you will receive a one-off supplementary grant payment of the order of €200. However, this will only be paid several weeks after you have proven that you successfully passed the course. Accommodation will be provided by the course-hosting institution but you will be expected to cover travel and accommodation costs for yourself.
ERASMUS students 2012/13
An overview of the courses offered can be found here. However, you can only apply with an FAU application form. These are issued on an individual basis.
In May the Central Office for International Affairs writes to the students due to study abroad in the academic year 2012/2013 who are entitled to take part in an EILC. If you think you belong to this group but you did not receive a message in May, get in touch with the COIA! The deadline for applications is 23th May 2012.
Any students who are nominated later and will be studying abroad in the summer semester 2013 should receive a message from the COIA in October. If you think you have been missed out, get in touch! The deadline for applications will be the end of October 2012.
