Im Jahr 2011 haben in Bayern aufgrund der Einführung des G8 zwei Jahrgänge die Abiturprüfung abgelegt, insgesamt rund 70.000 Schülerinnen und Schüler. Die Abiturprüfungen fanden daher zeitlich versetzt statt. Das Sommersemester 2011 begann an den bayerischen Hochschulen am 2. Mai 2011, um dem letzten G9-Jahrgang einen direkten Studienbeginn zu ermöglichen. Bis zum Jahr 2011 wurden in Bayern durch die Ausbauplanung zudem 38.000 zusätzliche Studienplätze neu geschaffen, davon über 4.100 allein an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
